Weightless data
This blog post over at TUAW, Embracing Weightless Data, is so true. This is how I’ve been living my digital life since almost a year now. With some minor changes.
Online Storage
I’ve been using more and more my .Mac iDisk. All my documents are now stored online on Apple’s computers. I can sync my files across all my mac and I can access them online using any computers. My iDisk is not my online online storage space, I have a Strongspace account too. I don’t use it much, but it has 5gigs of space and right now, it serves as my backup server away from home. I do have a Amazon S3 account, but I only used it for web application testing purpose. I will someday develop that killer webapp and I’ll need disk space for my users.
Online Productivity
I’ve been using all sort of web 2.0 apps, I use Google Docs & Spreadsheets instead of Microsoft Word and Excel. I’ve been using Wesabe as a Microsoft Money replacement, Meebo for my IM client, Gliffy for some quick diagram, Stikkit for posting some 3M notes love, del.icio.us for my bookmark management and Google Reader for my RSS. All those apps are always available, they’re not hosted on my mac / personal computer and I can use them where ever I am.
I use two email service, .Mac and Gmail, they are both available online and they’re both IMAP. I don’t have my email only stored on my computer.
Contact
I use Apple’s Address Book, it serve me well as I don’t need to use it online, but it is possible. It sync on my iPhone and my macs so I have my contact with me.
Photo
I use Flickr, but I don’t have a “pro” account. There are like 60 photos on it and I don’t know if I’ll like to post all my best photos online. I own a 1TB drive at home configured in raid to mirror the first drive and all my photos since I own digital camera are on that disk. I do backup them once in a while to make sure I don’t loose them. Would I be using more Flickr if I’d have a “pro” account? I don’t know. But I’m beginning to think about it.
Music
I don’t use any kind of online backup for my iTune library, I have a second 1TB drive for it as I have converted all my DVD to h.264 for my Apple TV. I do need to find a way to backup that data. Maybe Amazon S3 will be use for that in the future.
Movie
I don’t do any movie right now. I may have 20 small video clips that I took with my pocket digital camera, they are from my baby girl. I might put them up on Youtube, I don’t know. I’ll need to think about this.
This was a nice post on TUAW. They linked to an other great post, but they’re aimed at the Macbook Air. I don’t need to justify my purchase or anything, but I do feel good to read those kind of post and think out loud that maybe, in some way, beginning to use my computer in a way that only some small percentage of people are doing right now. It will evolve and it’s probably the way we’ll be using our computers in the future.
If like they say, Steve Jobs is a visionaire and that’s the way he see’s thing, well maybe this time I’ll be in the first row.
