This is the personal web page of Bernard Bolduc.

I write about stuff that I find cool. This is my own opinion, nobody else. I might write about security, tech and gadget. Take every thing with a grain of salt.

I don't tell you to hack your employer, but you may find information that might help you. This is for educational purpose. If you can do it, you probably need to fix it. If nobody tell you how it's done, how can you fix it. This is why I may write about it.

My computing essentials 2008

For the second time, Mark Pilgrim, puts out his essentials, what he uses daily on his computer.  I’ve been thinking of doing the same.  Here is my list.

  1. I use Apple OSX Leopard, I think this is the best compromise between using a Linux / Unix OS and having commercial support while been able to run software like Photoshop or Microsoft Word.
  2. Textmate for simple text file editing and coding.
  3. Acorn for simple image creation and editing.
  4. Skitch for screen grabbing.
  5. Transmit for ftp / sftp.
  6. 1Password, online password manager.
  7. Hotspot Shield, vpn for when I’m on an insecure network.
  8. PGP WDE, I need to encrypt my laptop computer disk.  You never know if you won’t be robbed or something.  (It happen once)
  9. Little Snitch, making sure external connection from my computer are authorized.
  10. SuperDuper for disk cloning and backup.
  11. Chronosync for synchronizing files across my network.
  12. Truecrypt for disk container encryption that is cross OS compatibility.
  13. Speed Download, download manager.
  14. Safari since Firefox is what too of a memory hog.
  15. Skype to communicate with my family.

Those where the software that I use on a regular basis.  I can’t replace them with online version.  Cause if I could I would do it.  I tried this year to move everything that I could online.  Working in the cloud brings me a flexibility that is nice.  I only have a hand full of application to install on a new computer, and within 30 minutes, I’m up and running.  Now here is my list of web 2.0 apps that I uses.

  1. Gmail, I use Gmail to receive my email from all my accounts.  It’s online, has a great minimal interface and works great.
  2. Google Docs, I use almost everything Google.  I don’t need a full fledge document editor, I write very little and Docs does the thing.
  3. Google Reader for RSS feed reading.
  4. Flickr for my photo repository.  I do like iPhoto, but it’s not as practical as flickr. I can show my pictures to everyone with only a mouse click or keep them private as easily.
  5. Wesabe for keeping track of my spending.
  6. Evernote for note taking.
  7. Meebo for IM.

That’s it!  The list is long, but it’s not that much when you compare how many software I could have installed when you compile everything in both categories.

On the hardware side I use the following:

  1. Apple hardware, I have a Macbook Air am now using a brand new Macbook Pro unibody, 2 Mac Mini and a black Macbook for my wife.
  2. An external 24 inch display.  When you’re at home, don’t work on a 13 inch screen.
  3. A Drobo with four 500 gigs drives.  It’s the best way to keep your essential files like photos, videos, documents that you don’t want to loose.
  4. A Logitech VX Nano laser mouse.  It replaced my Apple bluetooth Mighty Mouse when the scrolling ball stopped working.
  5. An iPhone 3G.

There are other peripheral, but not used as much.
